FW: Artists' commission - Manchester Museum and People United

Please see below for details of an upcoming commission opportunity with Manchester Museum in collaboration arts organisation People United on the theme of ‘wonder’. The full brief and details of how to apply are attached. The museum and People United are interested in particular in practitioners whose work is related to the spoken word.

Artists’ Commissions 2014:  Wonder and Role Models

With the support of our partners and funders: the Arts Council, Manchester Museum, Lunsford Primary School and Artswork, we are pleased to launch our second year of artists’ commissions to continue to help us explore the role the arts can play in developing a more caring society.

Based in Manchester and Maidstone, the two commissions will focus on the themes of ‘wonder’ and ‘role models’. These are informed by our research paper Arts and Kindness that explores how the arts might sow the seeds for kindness to grow, and develop our learning about the potential of the arts to inspire positive social change. We are looking for artists who want to broaden and develop themselves as artists, and who enjoy learning from other disciplines in order to inform and influence their practice.

Once again, artists will be supported, connected with wider conversations across disciplines, and feel part of a community of practice. We will offer the artists the flexibility to develop their own ideas within a wider framework. The deadline for applications is Monday 10 February at 5pm.

OPPORTUNITY: Flying Solo Artists Commission

Flying Solo Artists Commission

This March Flying Solo Festival returns to Contact for 2 weeks celebrating solo and one-to-one performance. Flying Solo presents bold and diverse performances across theatre, live art, spoken word, music and dance. Alongside the public programme, each year around 10 selected artists work with more established performers to gain the experience and confidence to develop their own solo work, through masterclasses and workshop activity.

The commission:

Each year Contact works in partnership with MC Amsterdam, Fuel and The Albany to offer an artist a commission and year-long support to create a new solo show. The chosen artist receives a £3k project commission, mentoring ranging from artistic, technical, fundraising and marketing support, and rehearsal space. MC Amsterdam also provides the opportunity to develop the new solo show in their venue where you will receive 1 week additional rehearsal space (expenses covered by Contact and MC Amsterdam) working alongside theatre professionals to develop your show, including a sharing of your work there. The selected artist will also receive mentoring sessions from Fuel and support and the opportunity to show their work at The Albany, Deptford.

Who can apply?

Any artist over 18 can apply who has an idea for a new solo or one-to-one show, and is serious about making performance. You may have already created other solo shows, or this may be your first. You may be an emerging or more established artist.

The majority of the residency will take place in Manchester. Although you do not have to live or work in Manchester, you will be expected to spend time developing your show here, and to cover the cost of this within the commission budget.

PLEASE NOTE, you need to be able to attend all of the Flying Solo master classes (12-15 March 2014 1pm – 4pm) and the Pitch event (15 March evening), as part of the selection process.

How to apply:

1.     Please provide a one-pagedeclaration of interest describing who you are, your idea for a new solo performance, why you want to collaborate internationally and why now is the right time for you to fly solo;

2.     Include an up to 10-minute video clip of your work (YouTube or Vimeo links).

8-10 shortlisted artists will then be invited to attend 4 days of master classes with established artists and industry experts at Contact, Manchester, during Contact’s Flying Solo Festival, before presenting your idea for a solo show to a live audience and panel made up of festival partners. The winner of the commission will then be announced at the end of the evening.

The master classes and development workshops are free for all shortlisted artists, as well as providing free tickets to see all shows at Flying Solo on the evenings of the sessions. Please note we cannot cover travel or expenses for this period.

Dates and times for the masterclasses: 1pm – 4pm daily on Wednesday 12th March to Saturday 15th March. Please note you must be available for these days to participate in the commission selection.

Date for the live pitch: Saturday 15th March

Commission timescale: March 2014 – March 2015

Send your application, along with examples of your work to: elizabethtait@contactmcr.com by Thursday 13th February at 5pm.

To propose a piece, please fill in a form from our website and send it back to submissions@talkwithleap.com by 11:59 P.M. on 17th February. We will endeavour to get in touch with all applicants in the following week.

For an informal discussion about your project, please contact Leo Burtin via email leo@talkwithleap.com or phone on 07584 177591 or Anthony Briggs on anthony.briggs@ludusdance.org or phone on 01524 35936.

Turn 2014 — call for proposals

Turn 2014 — call for proposals

Friday 4 + Saturday 5 April 2014 — Contact, Manchester www.turnmcr.org | #TurnMcr

A hÅb, Contact, Dance Manchester, Live at LICA co-production and a greenroom legacy project.

North West dancers and dance-makers (aged 18+) are invited to submit proposals of short pieces of work, works in progress or extracts of longer works for inclusion in this event.

Closing Deadline: 5pm, Friday 17 January 2014.

Turn:
An open submission dance platform for North West dancers and dance-makers:
● short finished pieces;
● excerpts;
● works in progress;
● sited works in and around the building also welcomed.
Proposals should be for pieces with some live presence, 20 minutes maximum for show-type work, technically simple, adaptable to quick turnarounds and suitable for showing alongside other pieces.
Sited and intervention-based works in and around the venue (Contact) are also strongly encouraged.
We are also accepting proposals for video based work to be screened around the building.

Turn:
● a public platform;
● an opportunity for artists to meet, show and peer review work;
● an artist networking event;
● a selection platform for the Turn Prize (a small, supported commission, supported by Dance Manchester, Contact, hÅb, Live at LICA).

We are looking for dance in any form which uses the artists' creativity, has strong concept, original choreography and professional aspiration. For example, alongside Contemporary, we'd be interested in hearing about street dancers who are looking to choreograph a piece rather than to present a demonstration of  skill; or classical work (from Ballet to Kathak, African and Chinese dance to Bharata Natyam) that is being re-imagined or re-explored, rather than a straight re-presentation of classic choreography.

Priorities are for high quality and exciting dance based work by North West artists, which has not been seen in Manchester before.

To apply:

1. Read the venue (Contact)'s tech specs + policies and procedures.
2. Complete and submit the proposal + monitoring forms. (Direct form links: http://habarts.wufoo.eu/forms/turn-2014-proposal-form + http://habarts.wufoo.eu/forms/hab-monitoring-form)

3. Include a short (compulsory) video submission - upload to your own YouTube/Vimeo or similar page and include the link in the proposal form; alternatively send via www.wetransfer.com (or similar) to turn@habarts.org OR send a DVD to: hÅb, c/o Z-arts, 335 Stretford Road, Manchester, M15 5ZA. Video should be short (max 10 mins) and does not have to be high quality. It can be from a camcorder, digital camera or mobile phone. Rehearsal footage, a video sketch of ideas or a video proposal with clips of previous work are all good ways of showing us your style and what you are proposing.

We would appreciate it if everyone could use the online form, but if you have significant difficulties contact turn@habarts.org for a .doc version.

Closing Deadline: 5pm, Friday 17 January 2014.

Notes:

The proposal form must be completed at one sitting (you can't save and return to it later) so please copy and paste the longer elements from another document.

Turn cannot offer fees or expenses.

There will be a technical meeting for all selected artists on Saturday 1 March 2014 (daytime).

Enquiries: turn@habarts.org | www.turnmcr.org | #TurnMcr

[emergencynw] REMINDER: Call-Out for Assemble / Extended Deadline

Hello,

Just before you all go and delve into that turkey we wanted to remind you about Assembles' call-out for proposals for our second event on 19th Feb.

We have extended the deadline so to give everyone a chance to recover from New Year. The new deadline is 5pm 8th January.

More info below.

 Merry Christmas!

“Getting There: A double bill”

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

 EXTENDED DEADLINE: 8th January 2014

Assemble are seeking proposals from emerging and/or student performance companies with a piece of 45-60 mins, for a platform event at Antwerp Mansion – February 2014

Getting There brings together performance companies at different stages of their careers to showcase their work at a supportive, contemporary platform. Getting There connects companies making work in the North-West and nationally, creating a setting for artists to meet and be inspired by each other’s work.

Alongside the selected company, we will be very proud to present a performance of Bristol-based Massive Owl’s We Used to Wait to kickstart their tour.

Moving through moments of playful interaction, participation and celebration, We Used To Wait explores what it means to be ‘live’ and present together in an increasingly digital world. We Used To Wait invites its audience to question why falling asleep on a stranger’s shoulder, playing a spontaneous game and feeling the wind of someone run past you might be important.

For an application form please email us at assembletheatre@gmail.com and for more info on what Assemble is all about, visit http://assembletheatre.wordpress.com/ or follow us on twitter @AssembleNW. If you have any questions or have want to have a chat about your work,  ring Hannah Woods on 07590987422.
