As Flying Solo Festival takes off next week (see www.contactmcr.com/flyingsolo for more info) we prepare to welcome some exciting national and international artists through Contact’s doors. One of those artists will be the wonderful Victoria Melody, who brings her solo show Major Tom to our main stage on Thursday 20th March. During her visit Victoria will be running an exclusive Masterclass in performance for artists. Details of which can be found below, along with an eshot about Major Tom.
A bit of background on Victoria first though:
Victoria Melody is a British artist with a background in fine art. She makes one-woman theatrical shows, performance interventions and films mainly about England’s pastimes, passions and tribes. Fascinated by anthropology, she immerses herself into communities and becomes an active participant in their rituals as research for her work. In the past she has become a pigeon racer, a northern soul dancer, a championship dog handler and a beauty queen. Victoria has presented her work nationally and internationally at venues including Soho Theatre, Oxford Playhouse, The Lowry, Bristol Old Vic, Battersea Arts Centre, Summerhall (Edinburgh Festival Fringe), Push Festival (Canada), Aarhus Festival (Denmark) and Brisbane Festival (Australia).
..and some info on the masterclass itself.
Victoria Melody: Masterclass
Thu 20 Mar, 12pm to 3pm. £10/8. Over 14s.
Book via 0161 274 0600 only.
To accompany the touring of her new show Major Tom, Victoria has created a workshop that offers an insight into the strategies and methodologies she uses when creating new work. The workshop will look at her creative triggers and approach to creating research based work. Participants will experiment with creating solo performances, confessional performances, humorous performances, performances from observed behaviour and performances using video and collected paraphernalia.
Please note places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
We look forward to seeing you during Flying Solo!
Kind regards,

Thanks a million!

The Flare Weekender, Manchester, UK
13+14 June 2014
After a quiet year in 2013, Flare is back!
Once again aiming to bring to Manchester the best in brand new radical theatre practice from the UK and abroad, following the success of the Flare International Festival of New Theatre 2011 and the Flare Weekender 2012, the Flare Weekender 2014 promises a unique, theatrical, 2 day encounter for artists, producers, promoters and the public.
Having been amongst the first in this country to profile the acclaimed performance work of Sleepwalk Collective, Jolika Sudermann, Andy Smith, Leen Dewilde, Ana Mendes, and many more, Flare once again sets its sights on the theatre of the future, and on profiling those most likely to take us there.
What is the Flare Weekender?
The Flare Weekender is a two day, international micro-festival of high quality new radical theatre-based performance, presented at Z-arts in Manchester in conjunction with Word of Warning. The little brother of the major Flare International Festival of New Theatre 2015, the Flare Weekender will present up to 10 performances, alongside discussions, workshops, networking events, live music and a party. The Flare Weekender is supported using public funding by Arts Council England, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford.
Who is Flare and what does it do?
Flare, directed by Neil Mackenzie and Kevin Egan, is a project committed to supporting and profiling the work of the best new makers of radical theatre. Flare works to curate the best new radical theatre practice, selected internationally, in consultation with other performance curators and producers across Europe. It runs international festivals and weekenders in the heart of Manchester, in partnership with some of the leading contemporary theatre producers in the city.
What does the Flare Weekender offers theatre artists?
€ A high profile public performance in the characterful Z-arts (Zion Arts Centre) building in Manchester (main theatre 210 seats, studio theatre 70 seats, plus other performance spaces/sites).
€ 2 days of performing, watching, participating and networking with international peers in the newest community of new theatre makers.
€ The prestige of selection for an international event committed to the presentation of the very best new theatre work (Flare 2011 saw 20 works selected from 120 applications, and was described as Œa brilliant line-up¹ by Lyn Gardner, in the Guardian newspaper).
€ A chance to profile work to significant theatre festival and venue programmers.
€ Free food and access to all performances, discussions and workshops.
€ Travel expenses, accommodation and financial support to be agreed.
In addition: € The Flare Weekender 2014 is offering two selected companies a development residency (studio rehearsal space, accommodation, per diems) for the week leading up to the Flare Weekender.
A word from an artist who was selected for both the Flare International Festival of New Theatre in 2011, and the Flare Weekender in 2012.
³What's so thrilling, and vital, about Flare is the intricately balanced shared-space it creates for both emerging and more established artists, managed with as much generosity as artistic rigour. Consequently it's that rare and precious thing: a festival able to accommodate a fantastically adventurous and cutting-edge program of unusual quality alongside a genuine commitment to the artists of the future.²

Every new event needs a start and this is it. Curator, artist and live art critic C James Fagan has brought together four contemporary artists for a special launch evening of performance ...and dance -- Mark Greenwood, Frances Kay, Steve Boyland and Ane Iselin Borgeland -- whose work reflects the inter-disciplinary nature of live and performance art.
New commissions and new collaborations on the night include: ‘The Grabber’ by performance artist Mark Greenwood (Lad Broke), features a performance score by visual artist Jayne Lawless, and explores the erasing of housing across Liverpool and the displacement caused;
Improviser/performance artist Steve Boyland will perform Unruly Liturgies, a series of spontaneously-composed contemplations for solo voice, created in response to the specific physical and allusive properties of the space/location
Returning to Liverpool after an appearing at 2013’s Poolside Emergency, Frances Kay (Emergency MCR ‘13) will perform ‘Sorry’, addressing notions of female identity;
And Ane Iselin Borgeland (Manifold) will perform ‘Micophono’, a dance piece which explores notions of identity through language and movement.
This evening of contemporary live art and performance at Camp and Furnace is free and all are welcome (free parking available). There will also be a paid bar running on the night.
The1st4 has come into existence in response to a gap in the cultural landscape of Liverpool. The1st4 aims to fill this gap with a regular series of events which will offer a space for locally based artists to show and develop new work, to network and collaborate. The1st4 also has ambitions to bring in some of the best national and international live and performance artists to ensure Liverpool’s standing as a major cultural centre.
