ENCOUNTERS
A one-day micro-festival of public interventions
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
DEADLINE: 11:59 P.M. 09/12/2013

Encounters is one day micro festival of public interventions taking place within Lancaster city centre, outdoors as well as within the premises of partner businesses on Saturday 22nd February 2014.

The project will seek to animate various city centre locations with performance pieces that utilise the concepts of generosity, gift giving, conversations and exchanges as tools for exploring social change and alternative economies.

It is our hope that Encounters will also create an accessible, friendly and playful environment within which conversations might take place between artists, passers-by, and the partners involved in making the project happen around the various topics the performance works may explore.

In addition to this, Encounters will attempt to disrupt the daily flow of residents, commuters and visitors in an enjoyable way through facilitating interactions between people in busy city centre locations normally mostly used as rush hour thoroughfares.

A successful Encounters would contribute to depict a vibrant urban centre that reflects its users as social beings rather than consumers and encourage similar activity to take place more often.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from artists to take part in this micro-festival. To propose a piece, please fill in the following form and send it back to encounters@talkwithleap.com by 11:59 P.M. on 9th December. We will endeavour to get in touch with all applicants before the start of the festive season.

For an informal discussion about your project, please contact Leo Burtin via email leo@talkwithleap.com or phone on 07584 177591. Please address general enquiries to the Encounters team at encounters@talkwithleap.com

Please note:

- A small commission fee will be available and be discussed with successful applicants on an individual basis to suit the project needs

- We cannot accommodate technically complex pieces (please get in touch for more details).

- We welcome submissions that are not written (performance scores, video submissions, photography etc.); get in touch with Leo if you’d like to send your proposal in an alternative format.

- We will expect successful applicants to provide risk assessments and any other relevant health and safety documents prior to the event.

Call for submissions now open for Sprint & Starting Blocks 2014

Sprint 2014 call for submissions
OK, so Louise Orwin’s Pretty Ugly, centrepiece of our Calm Down Dear festival, was one the biggest CPT hits on record. But did you know that it came through our 2013 Starting Blocks artist development scheme? And that we’re now advertising for applications to the 2014 version?

You’ve got until Mon 2 December to apply to bring your show to our Sprint festival, London’s biggest and best bonanza of new and unusual theatre. Sprint will run from March 7 to 30, 2014. All the background info is here. We also want all-new project ideas from emerging artists, which we can support via Starting Blocks, our unique artist development / peer network programme, that runs from Jan-March 2014 and culminates in work-in-progress sharings at Sprint. Details here.

If you got a show that does something new and exciting with theatre, apply to Sprint. If you’ve got an idea for one, and you’re at an early stage in your career, apply to Starting Blocks. We’d love to hear from you.

On November 25 & 26, we’re sharing the first stages of a new CPT co-production, with Undercurrent Theatre, which tells a totally remarkable (and local) story, about the evolutionary theorist George Price. Price was the American genius who stunned academia in the 1960s and 70s by developing a mathematical equation for kindness. But the implications of his discovery unbalanced him, driving him to suicide – in Tolmers Square, behind what’s now CPT. Director Laura Farnworth and her ace team, in collaboration with scientists and academics who (in some cases) worked with Price, now present Meet George, a show that will ask: What makes us kind to one another, and why? Is altruism genetic – or spiritual? And is there any such thing as free will?

You can get tickets to see the genesis of this extraordinary project here. Both performances will be followed by post-show discussions with the show’s science partners. Meet George is generously supported by the Wellcome Trust.

“Packed with warmth and humour,” sounds nice for December, doesn’t it? We’ve just announced three performances (Dec 11-13) of Edinburgh Fringe hit She Was Probably Not a Robot,  surreal, soulful comedy about a decomposing world and a comic visitorIt’s by Stuart Bowden, Aussie theatre-maker and one half of award-winning The Lounge Room Confabulators. Matt Trueman in The Scotsman hailed its “gorgeous notes of melancholia” and its “balance of humanity and humour.” The Stage pointed to the audience’s “hysterical laughter” and called the show “inspiring… [A] masterpiece.” Who are we to disagree? We’re thrilled to have Stuart visiting, and heartily recommend you book yourself a ticket here.

Meet the Producers/Programmers:

Compass Live Art (Yorkshire) has been working with Ilana Mitchell (Wunderbar, Newcastle) and Tamsin Drury (hÅb / Word of Warning, Manchester) to organise a series of gatherings across the northern region under the name of Taking Our Bearings North.

We aim to bring together artists, practitioners, producers, curators and academics. The purpose is to widen our networks and increase communication and therefore opportunities for artists.

Following an initial meeting in Leeds on 24 January 2013 we are planning our next gathering in:

Manchester at Z-Arts on October 11th 2.00-5.00pm

http://www.z-arts.org/about-us/getting-here/

Inspired by a similar event in the North East, we have invited a number of producers and programmers from each region (NW, NE, Yorkshire) to make a short presentation to outline the opportunities they have coming up for artists in the next 12 months – this could be programming, platforms, mentoring, anything of the kind. It is for multi disciplinary work.

The format for the afternoon will be 10 -12 presentations from across the northern regions, followed by refreshments and informal networking and ending with a coming together to share issues of common interest. There will also be a chance in the meeting for anyone not presenting to mention their own events and opportunities.

You are cordially invited to join us in Manchester on 11 October. The event is free but we would ask you to book so we can keep track of numbers.

Please RSVP to info@compassliveart.org.uk as soon as possible.
