FWD: Sprint 2015 call for submissions

Sprint Festival 2015

Sprint is London’s biggest and best established annual festival of new and unusual theatre and performance. It showcases work by the most exciting new artists and companies in the UK and beyond.
Applications are now open for the 2015 festival, which will run from March 5 to 29, 2014. Ideally, proposals will be for work that is finished by March 2014, but they will also consider works-in-progress, ‘scratch’ performances and on-site artist development (see Starting Blocks).
Since its inception in 1997 as a showcase for ‘physical, visual and unusual theatre’, Sprint has continued to grow in scope and reputation. Companies who found early success at Sprint include Unlimited Theatre, Cartoon de Salvo, Fevered Sleep and Shunt. More recently, the festival has featured the work of Idle Motion, Made In China, Paper Birds, Stoke Newington International Airport and Search Party.

Submissions for SPRINT FESTIVAL 2015
What they want
• New work, new ways of making theatre, new experiences for audiences
• Work to take place in the theatre.If you are applying to perform in the theatre, please come and see a show and ensure you’re familiar with the size and character of the space.
• Work to take place elsewhere in the building. They are open to proposals for intimate-scale and/or one-on-one performances that may lend themselves to other spaces in the building.
• Site-specific and/or off-site work. They are interested in work that takes place in the streets and squares, waterways and byways beyond CPT’s doors – as long as the artist has a realistic idea of how such a project might be achieved. It will by necessity be the artist’s responsibility to seek permission to perform in the specific location. (CPT will support this process, but cannot take full responsibility.)
• Virtual work. They welcome proposals for audio projects, walkabout projects, auto-teatro – or projects that in other ways take theatre off the stage and into the world (or the audience’s heads). Specific technical equipment – e.g. headsets, iPods, smartphones – may need to be provided by the artist.
What they don’t want
• 'New writing’. They usually work with artists who create collaboratively. Playwriting, in the conventional sense, isn’t usually part of their process. They will consider exceptions, provided an innovative approach is demonstrated
• Revivals of classic plays
• Dance. They are primarily a venue of theatre and performance, and not a dance venue per se. They will consider proposals for dance-theatre performance, where the emphasis is on ‘theatre’

What they provide
the arrangement with Sprint artists is flexible according to the needs of each show, but the usual offer is:
• Full PR and marketing support, inclusion in brochures, flyers, website, social media activity
• 50:50 box-office split
• Technician to support get-in and get-out. CPT technician may be able to operate ythe show - subject to arrangement
• Discount tickets to other events in the Sprint festival

Submissions for STARTING BLOCKS
Applications are also invited for Starting Blocks, a creative community for developing new theatre work that runs alongside Sprint.

Starting Blocks offers the opportunity to create new theatre work with the support of Camden People’s Theatre, as part of a peer network that encourages collaboration and engagement between participating artists. Over ten weeks, the selected artists will meet weekly to share practice, ideas and their developing works. They will also be given space to develop their particular project and practice. The scheme runs from January to March 2014, allowing time for the participants to develop work, or work-in-progress, to be shown at CPT’s prestigious Sprint festival.
They are particularly keen to receive applications from solo artists. Please bear in mind that Starting Blocks involves a significant time commitment. Rehearsal space is made available weekdays 10am-6pm.
Applicants can apply with just an idea, or with an idea that has received early-stage development, and now needs space, structure, and peer support to help bring it to life. Projects that have already been developed at another organisation, or with the financial support of a funding body, will not be considered.
Recent successful projects to have been developed through Starting Blocks include The Way You Tell Them by Rachel Mars, Pretty Ugly by Louise Orwin, Don Quijote by Tom Frankland and Keir Cooper, Brothers of Justice by Joe Wild and Lawrence Speck and Fox Symphony by Foxy & Husk. Participating artists (2011-14) include: Greg Wohead, Ira Brand, Fran Millican-Slater, HalfCut and Anne Langford.
The scheme is overseen by CPT director Brian Logan, who alongside CPT staff will select participants by application form and interview from an open call for submissions.

The deadline for Sprint and Starting Blocks applications is Fri 14 Nov at 12pm.

Hatch: Exchange Open Call for Submissions

Hatch: Exchange

11 & 12 October 2014 -

Embrace Arts

Leicester

Call for Submissions - Hatch: Exchange

£200 per selected performance

Embrace Arts, Leicester,
Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 October 2014
(selected performances to be presented Sunday 12 October)

Exchange (n.)

1. An act of giving one thing and receiving another in return.

2. A building or institution used for the trading of particular commodities.

3. A short conversation or argument.

Hatch, the East Midlands' leading mobile platform for experimental theatre and live art, returns to Embrace Arts in association with In Good Company for a weekend of performances, workshops and events exploring the notion of give and take.

We are currently seeking submissions for performance work in any style or genre which responds to the themes of ‘exchange’, from artists and performers looking to show their work to new audiences and share skills and experiences with colleagues, peers and potential collaborators. Performances will be presented on Sunday 12 October, following a day of artist-led workshops and events presented by Hatch in association with In Good Company on Saturday 11 October. It would be fabulous if you could join us for the Saturday to take part in these activities, but if you are only able to perform on Sunday we still want to hear from you.

We are especially interested in performance work which falls between disciplines or is hard to define, work which is still in progress or otherwise ‘unfinished’, and work which can connect directly with audiences without the use of a fourth wall. Embrace Arts is one of only two purpose-built spaces in the East Midlands for the promotion of arts and disability and we particularly welcome proposals from Deaf or disabled artists.

Because of the nature of the venue and the event, performances which are suited for flexible spaces and which are mainly technically self-contained will work best (it won’t be possible to accommodate complicated lighting designs for example), but all proposals will be considered on the merits of their ideas and our potential ability to present your work in the best possible way. If you want to know whether something specific will be possible before submitting your application, please ask us!

Each selected performance will receive a fee of £200.

Entrance to the public for all events will be free (although individual elements may require payment of some kind...)

The deadline for submissions is midnight at the end of Monday 15 September 2014. We will reply to all applicants in the week following the deadline.

For an application form, venue images or if you have any queries, please email hatch@hatchnottingham.org.uk

Deadline for applications, 12 noon, Tuesday June 24th.

Call and Response
Using the structure of Call and Response, this workshop invites emerging, mid-career or recently graduated artists to explore through physical, performative and playful acts.

Call and Response, a form of communication rooted in African diaspora but also found in other cultures, often underpins social and cultural interaction, through art, dance and music - think hip-hop, Gospel and Jazz.

This workshop aims to be a social and communal ‘gathering’, encouraging participants to develop ‘calls’ to elicit ‘responses’ from their peers. Using conventions of West African tribal gathering, guests will share food, drink, music, conversation practice and good times in Manchester over 1 evening and 2 days.

The workshop is open to those working with Performance and Live art and those perhaps looking to engage with performance strategies for the first time. An interest, desire and openness to examine historical works and develop performative responses will be key.

Experimentica14 call for submissions. Deadline 6 June

EXPERIMENTICA14: CO-EXISTENCE HAS NEVER BEEN EASY

The 2014 call for submissions is now open!
This year’s festival takes its title from the 2009 science fiction thriller ‘District 9’ (directed by Neill Blomkamp), a multi-layered allegory that explores our attitudes to outsiders. The title is not a theme but we hope will be a starting point in which participants can explore how we co-exist.
Every year, Experimentica selects a range of artists from an open call for submissions. Selected artists will be invited to develop their proposal for a performance or presentation to take place during the festival.
Applicants should be engaged in the creation of experimental live performance, sound, film and video, installation, dance and theatre. They might also write poetry or prose and be keen to test their work in a new way that engages with the festival and its wider context online, in print, through radio or other broadcast means.
  • If you have an idea that you would like to test out; a fully realised work that you would like to show for the first time, or a performance that you have shown before but would like the chance to bring it to new audiences, we would like to hear from you.
  • If you would like to colonise a space at Chapter – or elsewhere in Cardiff - or share ideas and critical feedback with other artists or host a talk or event, we would like to hear from you.
  • If you are an artist who would like to take part we actively encourage you to stay for all five days of the festival so that you can make the most of your time here. Alongside the opportunity to see works by many other artists, this also includes our daily peer-to-peer dialogue and performance review, talks and presentations hosted by our artist-curator team and social events.

Hazard 2014

Hazard 2014 - the hit and run of sited festivals - call for proposals.

Hazard 2014 – Saturday 12 July – Manchester City Centre

Presented by Word of Warning, produced by hÅb + The Larks in collaboration with the participating artists, a greenroom legacy project

Proposals are now invited for Hazard 2014 (Deadline Friday 16 May 2014, 6pm):

A micro-festival of incidental intervention and sited performance, blurring the boundaries between art and activism… cheeky, thought-provoking and sometimes raunchy sprees of eccentricity…

Manchester’s unique micro-festival of all things bizarre and stripy returns for its fifth outing, and invites you to join in with its strange antics and ludic(rous) activities. So far we’ve wrapped Cathedral Gardens in fluttering hazard tape, pitted together a lion and a unicorn, moved the goalposts (literally) and witnessed flat packed children take over streets of Manchester – oh, and conducted a hoola-hoopathon; The Larks had the public riddling, racing and chasing as urban archaeologists and private investigators, injecting mass gaming into St Ann’s Square and beyond. To date Hazard has produced four micro-festivals of sited performance and intervention – over 80 artists have taken to the streets of Manchester including: Action Hero, Alex Bradley, Jordan Mackenzie, Juliann O’Malley, Katherina Radeva, Michael Pinchbeck, Richard DeDomenici, Shahram Entekhabi + the vacuum cleaner.

For a glimpse of previous outbreaks of hazardous behaviour see here.

In 2014 we are seeking to do it all again, once more incorporating playful interjections from The Larks.

Think big, think bright, think irreverent!

Call for Proposals:

This year we are using St. Ann’s Square as our focal hub again, with projects happening in, or radiating out from there.

We are now looking for proposals of work for a daytime event (Sat 12 July, 12noon-5pm) in Manchester City Centre:

• work that intervenes in public spaces in the city centre;

• work that is socially engaged, and/or conceptually motivated;

• work that is low- or no-tech and self-sufficient;

• work that is interactive and playful – which could mean anything from street/urban/pervasive games to playful spectacles;

• we will give bonus points for creative engagement with the idea of hazard – chance, danger, risk, and/or use of yellow+black tape!

In addition to the general call for proposals of work, there are also a number of specific opportunities:

• one commission (small budget) for a ‘launch’ embodying the notion of Hazard, which focuses on and draws attention to the event;

• ideas for flash-mobs and/or mass participation interventions;

• work that is playful/interactive/participatory (both games and more loose formats welcome).

Hazard will be programmed by Tamsin Drury of hÅb, with The Larks team focusing on interactive/play-based work. We will select from proposals from this call and other research, to put together the best possible programme of work for the event. There are no fixed criteria aside from the guidelines above and the feasibility/legality of the ideas for realisation in the public domain.

Honorarium/expenses (£2-300 per piece) available, to be negotiated on an individual basis. Please include outline budget with your proposal. For projects needing significantly more money, please contact hazard@habarts.org to talk it through first.

To apply

Please complete the proposal form (and the monitoring form too if you can bear it!)

A couple of people seem to be having problems with the links so the direct ones are:
