Be Live as part From The Rooftops at The Penthouse.
Who? This is a call for artists working with live art and/or sound.
What? Be Live is an evening of art that asks for something new in a place where risks can be taken. Be Live- asks for heightened presence from both artist and audience. This does not mean a lot of annoying participatory work- it means none of us should be by standers.
The evening will be a multi sensory exploration into the moment and will push at the walls and ceilings of acceptability of an art show. We are interested in the personal as shared experience and the shared live art space as politically and socially important. Our use of an image of Valerie Solanas in the poster acts as a direct link to artist as risk taker and peddler.
What we are looking for:
Surprises.
Intelligent use of space.
New live, sound and multi sensory works. Works can be installed rather than performed but they must create an immediate experience that work in a ‘one night only’ context.
Work unapologetic of being personal or honest.
What we are not looking for:
Tried and tested ways of performing or presenting live art or sound. For example there will be no theatre/music/gig/sound art table or floor ‘set ups’.
Repeated motifs of live art (ie no balloons).
Sound artists who carry out their regular set regardless of site.
Work based only on theatrical merit
We do not require proposed work to be all singing and all dancing.
We do not require proposed work to be entertaining.
We do not require the answers before you begin.

The Penthouse, 507-511 Hilton House, 26-28 Hilton Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1 2EH.
Spaces: Hilton House Staircase and lift. Penthouse lobby area and toilets. Penthouse corridor project space. Penthouse Suites 1, 2 and 3.
