Independent Artist Initiative 2021 call for Artist Advisors (paid role)

Independent Artist Initiative 2021

Call for Artist Advisors (paid role)

DEADLINE: Fri 15 JAN 2021

Over the past few months, a range of Greater Manchester’s Arts and Culture organisations have been exploring ways that they can support independent artists and companies in the region to develop and share their work in 2021, as the sector, hopefully, starts to emerge from the current levels of Covid restrictions.

After consultation with a wide range of independent artists and companies we are now planning the following initiatives:

  1. The cultural organisations will create a ‘pot of resources’, including money producer/curator support, gallery/rehearsal/performance space and more.  Independent artists and companies from all disciplines and at any level of experience, can apply for these resources to support the development or showing of new work, made in Greater Manchester.  Decisions will be made by a panel of independent artists and representatives of the cultural organisations, with independent artists in the majority.  There will be an emphasis on supporting diversity, artists not currently known to the organisations, and reach across the city and region.
  2. There is also the possibility of supporting the sharing of work by independent artists and companies in Greater Manchester next summer. A region-wide marketing campaign will highlight the work developed through the ‘pot of resources’ and also other new independent work from Greater Manchester artists.  This marketing (and hopefully other) support will be available to anyone presenting new work, in any discipline, developed in Greater Manchester, in Summer 2021.
  3. This initiative is, it is hoped, a step towards a new and better relationship between independent artists and cultural institutions in Greater Manchester. As such, the call-out will also welcome proposals from independent artists who would like to use the resources available to focus not on outputs but on initiatives creating change and challenge within the sector – this could include forums, new forms of residency, or other processes.

Independent Artist Initiative 21 is being supported by a growing list of organisations in Greater Manchester including: Brighter Sound, Centre for Contemporary Chinese Art, City of Makers Action Group, Community Arts North West, Contact, 53two, Greater Manchester Artist Hub, hÅb, Hope Mill Theatre, HOME, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester Camerata, Manchester City of Literature, Manchester International Festival, Manchester Museum, Manchester Music City, Marketing Manchester, Matt + Phreds, National Football Museum, Oldham Coliseum, Science and Industry Museum, ThickSkin, Vision Lab, Z-Arts and a range of other galleries, spaces and organisations, including independent spaces.

CALL FOR ARTIST ADVISORS (paid role)

DEADLINE: Fri 15 JAN 2021

Independent Artist Initiative 2021 (IAI21) is now seeking 4 Artist Advisors to join the panel to advise on and distribute the ‘pot of resources’ for new works from Greater Manchester artists; and to advise on the shaping of the programme.

Artist Advisors will receive a fee of £1000 for approximately 5 days work, spread out over a number of months from late January, to include meetings, reading applications and other forms of feedback.

PLEASE NOTE: Artist Advisors will not be eligible to apply to the ‘pot of resources’

Applicants should be based in Greater Manchester and have an established track record in their artform (at least 3 years of professional practice). Some curatorial or selection experience would be beneficial but not essential.

Meetings will take place via a range of video conferencing platforms (Zoom/Teams/Skype) so please let us know if you have any access issues involved in engaging with these.

We want to hear from a wide range of people from across the region and artforms. We particularly welcome applications from those currently under-represented in the industry as a result of barriers arising from social, gender, sexuality, financial, ethnic, cultural, religious, geographic or educational disadvantage or disability. If you would like to explore how we can support you in overcoming these barriers, please get in touch with us at IAI21@habmcr.org and we will happily explore this with you in advance of your application.

Independent Artists Initiative 21 is being coordinated by a consortium of cultural organisations in Greater Manchester.
